The five rural libraries in the Annapolis Valley region of Nova Scotia, Canada, were on the verge of closing forever. The municipalities couldn’t raise the 351.000 dollars needed to keep them open this fiscal year. Then the romance novelist, who built her career as a reader in those very aisles, put 300.000 dollars out of her own pocket.
“I don’t know what the point of being a successful author in Nova Scotia would be if I didn’t use it for something good”, she said. “I don’t think I would be a writer without my local library.”
The library thanked her for the lifeline, but both Reid and officials were clear: a private donation cannot sustain a public service forever. Now all eyes are on the provincial government. 🙏
