There are some questions a stranger shouldn’t ask, but people ask Iain Armitage to his face.

The actor who played young Sheldon Cooper in ‘Young Sheldon’ is now 18 and says that some people approach him in public and blurt out “Are you gay?” or “Are you seeing anyone?”. Others assume he’s in a relationship with McKenna Grace, his co-star on the series, where she played Paige.

Iain shared this in a book about the series written by journalist Jessica Radloff. His strategy is humor: if a man asks him if he’s gay, he can answer “Not for you” or “I haven’t found the right man yet”. And when the joke isn’t enough, he cuts things short: “That’s private, friend. Don’t ask”.

He neither confirmed nor denied anything about his orientation: his answers show how he deflects the questions, not what’s behind them. He has played Sheldon since he was 9, and ever since, he’s had to put up with comments about his appearance, his voice, and the changes of adolescence. Does playing a famous character mean you have to tell anyone and everyone about your life?
