Anne Hathaway casually let it slip in 2020: Christopher Nolan does not allow chairs on his sets. His reason, according to the actress, was simple and a little ruthless: “if there are chairs, people sit down, and if they are sitting, they are not working”.
The quote went viral so quickly that Nolan’s own team had to step in to calm things down. His representative, Kelly Bush Novak, clarified that the director chooses not to sit himself, but he has never banned chairs for the rest of the cast and crew. The only things that are banned on his sets: cell phones and smoking.
Years later, Cillian Murphy was still joking about the matter after winning his first Golden Globe for “Oppenheimer”. It seems that the legend of Nolan’s chairs outlived any official clarification 😅
