The images did not take long to set social media ablaze. The wife of Abelardo de la Espriella, Colombia’s president-elect, greeted a woman in the crowd and immediately afterward wiped her hand — a gesture that was caught on camera and that thousands interpreted as a sign of contempt. 😤
For many, the message was clear: “No one who aspires to represent a people can afford that gesture; it is the most humiliating thing you can do to someone”. But another group of users stopped the train: “They are condemning her over one second of video without knowing what happened before or after — that is not fair either”.
