“Not wanting to become a mother does not mean that a woman has less love to give”. Miley Cyrus has spoken openly about the pressure that still exists around motherhood and how a woman who says she does not want to have children is often looked at as if there were something strange about her decision.
It was during an interview with ELLE Estados Unidos in 2019 that the singer questioned those expectations. “If you don’t want to have children, people feel sorry for you, as if you were a cold woman incapable of love”, she reflected while speaking about how women are still expected to start a family and become mothers.
Miley also explained that many women who choose a different path may be considered selfish or incomplete, while men who decide not to become fathers are rarely questioned with the same intensity. In that conversation, she also linked her decision to her concern for the future of the planet.
For her, bringing children into the world should be a personal choice and not something a woman does simply because others expect her to eventually want to do so.
Because wanting, caring for, and building a life alongside other people can take many forms. Being a mother is one of them, but choosing not to be one does not make a woman incapable of love.
