Iker Casillas recalled in 2020 one of the most difficult episodes of his life: the heart attack he suffered on May 1, 2019, while training with Porto.

The former Spanish goalkeeper explained how he experienced those first moments and acknowledged that he initially did not understand the severity of what was happening.

“I thought it was something allergic or a drop in blood pressure. When I had to lie down on the floor, I realized something was happening to me”, he recalled.

During his recovery, Casillas also confessed that he went through moments of fear and uncertainty. “After the heart attack, I was sad for approximately a month. I was afraid to walk, sleep, and do any physical exertion. It was impossible”, he explained.

Regarding his condition and the possibility of returning to sporting activity, he said: “Not now. I’m also on a lot of medication that makes me feel well. I think only doctors can say what I can or cannot do”.

The episode ultimately marked a turning point in his career. When asked about the possibility of returning to football, Casillas was cautious and acknowledged the difficulties he faced ahead: “I think it will be difficult for me to play again”.

Casillas ultimately retired on August 5, 2020, as one of the best goalkeepers in the history of football and the greatest in the history of Spain.
