She arrived at the courts in Choluteca, Honduras, with a single hope: that the man she herself reported would be released that day.

Her husband has been in prison for about six months in a domestic abuse case. The woman, who has two children with him, spoke to Metro TV in a faltering voice: “Yes, I regret what I did, but hopefully, God willing, he’ll be released today”. She admitted that she misses him and that the separation has been difficult for the family.

But she didn’t arrive alone. Emma Isabel Flores Vallejo and Norma Reyes, two women who say they watched the detainee grow up, showed up to support him. One of them said she has supported him because, in her view, his family members haven’t cared enough.

As of the latest update, his release had not been confirmed. The decision rests with the judges, and the complainant’s remorse does not, by itself, close a case. Should the complainant’s forgiveness carry weight in a case like this?
