In a scrapyard pond, a small white spot could barely stay afloat. It was Pretzel, an injured and malnourished puppy who is now learning to walk on just three legs

When they found her, Pretzel didn’t even have the strength to get out of the water on her own.

The puppy was discovered in a pond at a scrapyard in Cleveland, Texas, with an open fracture in her right hind leg, the bone exposed, and signs that she had been injured for several days. She was extremely thin, covered in fleas and ticks, had larvae around her mouth, and was so severely anemic that her blood pressure couldn’t even be measured properly.

The ThisIsHouston Rescue organization took on her case and rushed her to the vet. She needed two blood transfusions while specialists assessed whether they could reconstruct the limb, but the contamination in the wound made the risk of infection too high.

In the end, they had to amputate her leg. The surgery went well, and her vital signs began to improve quickly: she started eating on her own again, regained her strength, and was able to leave the hospital.

Pretzel now lives with a foster family while she finishes healing and learns to get around on three legs. Just a few days ago, she was alone and gravely injured beside a pond; today, she has a name, a temporary home, and an entire team dedicated to giving her the chance she almost never got ❤️
