Cristiane Mucci arrived at the delivery room in Ponte Nova, Brazil, without knowing that her daughters would make medical history on June 11.

María Cecilia and María Alice were born by C-section still inside their amniotic sac, the membrane that protected them throughout the pregnancy. Dr. Emilio Garavini, the gynecologist who delivered them, had to break the sac with his own hands so they could breathe for the first time outside the womb.

This type of birth, known as an ‘en caul birth’ or ‘mermaid birth’, occurs in just 1 out of every 80,000 births worldwide. The Nossa Senhora das Dores Hospital confirmed that both babies are healthy, and images from that moment are already traveling around the world because of how rarely something like this is seen in a delivery room. 👶✨
