Adriano opened up about his depression after his father’s death.

In comments to O Globo television, reported by AS in March 2010, the striker said that after his father’s death, he fell into depression and began drinking in Italy. Recalling his time at Inter, he linked that loss to the decline he had experienced.

His physical condition was also part of that story. He described being overweight and bloated, and admitted that he had low self-esteem. He had become out of shape. His account was about the weight, but also about how he felt during those years.

“In Italy, I drank all kinds of things”, he said. At the same time, he denied being dependent on alcohol and said he drank two or three times a week. That was how he described his alcohol consumption when talking about a period marked by depression after his father’s death.

Flamengo made a psychologist available to him. That support also became part of a story that went beyond his physical condition or his performance at Inter.

The footballer talked about his body. The son, about an absence.
