In Japan, there is a word for falling asleep at work without being looked down on: inemuri. It means something like “being present while you sleep”, and it is not synonymous with laziness. It is quite the opposite. 😴

Dr. Brigitte Steger, from the University of Cambridge, has been studying this phenomenon since the late 80s. According to her, falling asleep in a meeting, at the office, or on public transport is interpreted as a sign that you worked so hard that your body could not take it anymore.

That said, there is one rule: not just anyone can do it. If you are new at work, it is best not to even try. But if you have seniority or years at the company, that improvised nap can work in your favor. 🇯🇵
