Dr. K. Lakshmi Bai is almost 100 years old and has just made the most important decision of her life.
For decades, she worked as a gynecologist in India and saw something she could never forget: women who died of cancer not because of a lack of treatment, but because they lacked the money to pay for it. That image haunted her throughout her career. So when the time came to decide what to do with her lifelong savings, she did not hesitate: she donated 3,4 crore rupees, approximately 350.000 dollars, to AIIMS in Bhubaneswar.
That money will fund cancer care for women without resources, patients you and I will never meet, but who now have an opportunity that did not exist before. Dr. Bai spent her life caring for others. With her final major decision, she found a way to keep doing so even when she is no longer around to see it.
