Iran’s national team arrived in Mexico and is already in the eye of the storm. Although it qualified for the 2026 World Cup legitimately, its three Group matches are on U.S. soil — and the Iranian authorities confirmed that players and coaching staff must enter and leave the U.S. on the same day as the match. No staying. No resting. In addition, 15 officials and staff members were denied visas. An Iranian official called it “the worst form of political interference in sport”.
Some say that the U.S. has every right to control who enters its territory, regardless of whether a World Cup is involved. 🇺🇸 But others respond that FIFA should never have assigned Iran’s matches to a country with which it has such deep diplomatic tensions — and that treating a qualified national team this way is simply unacceptable. ⚽
