The Turkish preacher issued a warning no one asked for: he said men without beards could provoke “indecent thoughts” in other men because they look too much like women. “God forbid!”, he concluded, as if he were averting a catastrophe.
A couple of screenshots were enough for the clip to go around the world. And that’s where the story took a turn: it stopped being about beards and became a full-blown cultural clash. In some countries, a beard is synonymous with wisdom and religious authority; in others, you can’t even tell whether someone has one or not.
