Andrew Garfield holds nothing back. At 43, the actor once again defended an idea he first put forward in 2013: that Spider-Man could be gay, and that it would take nothing away from the character.
“I still believe that anyone can put on that suit”, he told Entertainment Weekly. For him, the reason millions love the superhero is precisely that: he has no defined race, no fixed gender, and no clearly defined sexuality. Anyone can see themselves reflected there.
The curious thing is that this isn’t an improvised idea. Garfield revealed that during his time as Peter Parker, he spoke with producer Matt Tolmach about changing Mary Jane’s gender, and even proposed Michael B. Jordan for a Spider-Man with a different sexual orientation. Thirteen years later, he maintains exactly the same thing.
