The actress, mother of Louis (16) and Laila (13), told Hoda Kotb that she becomes “super paranoid” every time her children walk out the door without her. They try to calm her down, telling her that everything will be alright. She responds with something else: “It’s not safe outside”.
Sandra is white. Her children are Black. And that difference, she says, completely changes how the world sees them when she isn’t nearby to explain who they are. “They’re my babies, they’re my life, but no one knows that when they leave my house”, she confessed, in the voice of a mother who has learned to be afraid of something she cannot control.
