The 53-year-old Portuguese wrote a column in the Daily Mail in which he did not ask politely: he demanded Gianni Infantino’s head. “It is the lowest, most dishonest and cowardly behavior I have ever seen”, he wrote about the FIFA president. And he did not stop there: on social media he accused him of having “lied, deceived and tried to enrich himself at the expense of the game”.
What is striking is that Figo was precisely the one who backed Infantino in 2016, after having himself been a candidate for the presidency in 2015. It all erupted over a plan that Infantino tried to impose to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors, something the confederations flatly rejected and forced him to back down. Amid the split, Carlos Cordeiro, one of his trusted men, has already resigned.
