Nature has a peculiar way of scaring us without meaning to.
There is a fungus that grows attached to the base of dead trees or trees in an advanced state of decomposition, and its appearance leaves little to the imagination: dark, elongated, twisted fingers that emerge from the ground as if someone had been buried upside down and were trying to get out. That is why it was named “dead man’s fingers,” a name that describes exactly what you see and nothing more.
It needs no metaphors or horror stories. Simply finding it in the forest, among roots and rotting wood, is enough to understand why those who come across it feel that shiver of looking at something that should not exist on the surface.
