“It saddens me to know that one body type is acceptable and the other has no value”: Renée Zellweger’s reflection on bodies resurfaces amid the wave of thinness among celebrities

No one asked her about her performance.

After Bridget Jones, Renée Zellweger was only asked one thing: how she had lost the 30 pounds she had gained for the role. She noticed it quickly. Every interview ended up focusing on the same thing, as if her talent weighed less than her size.

In a conversation with Oprah Winfrey that received little attention and went viral again years later on TikTok, she decided to answer differently from what was expected.

She offered no tips or routines. She said something that made more than one person uncomfortable: “It saddens me so much because it seems to imply that one way of being is acceptable and the other has no value, and that simply isn’t true”.

Today, with celebrities losing weight at a pace that concerns doctors and fans alike, that statement has found a new audience that understands it better than it did in 2001.
