“It seems like I’m on the autism spectrum. Because I am” — Tom Hardy

Tom Hardy wasn’t making an announcement.

It was October 2024, and the actor was talking with the audience at New York Comic Con about how he plays Eddie Brock and Venom, one of the roles that has had the biggest impact on him. As he explained his method, he said he could get very technical about the process. Then, out of nowhere, he said the words that changed the tone of the conversation: “It just seems like I’m on the autism spectrum. Because I am”.

WIRELMAGE

He said it in the middle of his explanation, without a dramatic pause or a speech. And that was exactly why the words resonated so strongly. Without meaning to, Hardy reminded everyone of something that is often forgotten: autism doesn’t look just one way, and everyone on the spectrum experiences it in their own way.

Over time, the actor has also become involved in initiatives supporting the autistic community. One of them is his collaboration with the brand Tatami Fightwear, whose collection donates funds to organizations connected with autism. Sometimes, a phrase spoken effortlessly ends up opening a much bigger conversation 💙
