Matt Kuwata has almost porcelain-like skin, enormous eyes, and such a stylized face that people in Japan coined a term to describe it: the “Matt-ka” effect. They call him a living doll, a mannequin, an anime character. His aesthetic even inspired photo filters so others could look like him.

For years, Matt insisted there had been no surgery, that it was all makeup. He said he spent up to three hours on his beauty routine before leaving the house. The contrast with his father, former star pitcher Masumi Kuwata, a Japanese baseball legend with a traditional appearance, made the fascination even greater.

But according to Japanese media, the story changed. On a 2024 television program, Matt admitted that his spending on cosmetic surgeries exceeded 10 million yen, approximately 66.700 dollars. He started with hyaluronic acid injections in his forehead and lips and eye surgery, and the most painful procedure was his nose: 4 operations, with cartilage taken from his ears and ribs. He also said that his chin had been lengthened by 3 centimeters.
