She even managed to silence Nicole Kidman!
Mariska Hargitay made history by becoming the first woman in 15 years to host the Emmy Awards, and from the opening monologue, she made it clear that she was going to take the stage with humor.
At one point, she began talking about the power of television with a speech that sounded suspiciously familiar. In reality, she was recreating, word for word, Nicole Kidman’s famous commercial for AMC.
Nicole herself, seated among the audience, interrupted her to jokingly object: “That’s mine. That’s my bit. You can’t do that”. Mariska carried on as if nothing had happened, until Kidman insisted again that it was literally her line.
Then came the punchline: “Shut up, movie lady! Tonight, it’s television’s turn!”, Hargitay replied, sending the audience into laughter.
And that was only one part of a night in which the star of Law & Order: SVU sang, performed sketches, and celebrated nearly three decades of playing Olivia Benson.
After 15 years without a woman at the helm of the Emmy Awards, Mariska certainly didn’t go unnoticed.
