“It was God’s will… Everyone’s children could be mine”: Dolly Parton explained why she never had children and how she found purpose in it

Dolly Parton said it with a calmness that only certainty can bring.

In 2020, sitting across from Oprah Winfrey on ‘The Oprah Conversation’, the 74-year-old singer confessed something few expected from the queen of country: she never wanted to be a mother, and it wasn’t a void either. “I didn’t have children because I believed God didn’t want me to have them, so that everyone’s children could be mine”, she said. She explained that this freedom allowed her to create the Imagination Library, her program that distributes free books to children from birth until age 5 in several countries around the world.

She was married to Carl Dean from 1966 until he died in 2025. Dolly died on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80, as confirmed by her nephew Bryan Seaver. Today, that 2020 phrase reads differently: not as an explanation, but as a testament to a life.
