On August 22, 2024, Juan Izquierdo collapsed in the middle of a match at the Morumbí stadium. Leandro Lozano, his former teammate on the Uruguay national team, was just a few meters away and was among the first to assist him. Days later, Izquierdo died.
Two years later, fate brought Lozano back to that same pitch, against the same Sao Paulo, now wearing the Boca Juniors shirt. There, he scored his first goal for the team, the one that sent Boca through to the next round of the Copa Sudamericana.
“Two years ago, on this same pitch and against this same team, I lost a teammate”, he said shortly after the match ended.
“When I got to the locker room, it was like déjà vu. Even though it was two years ago, it felt like it happened yesterday”. A goal that was much more than three points.
