Jacob Smith was 20 years old, engaged, and about to finish his shift at the McDonald’s in Yuba City, California, when his coworker Jalani Bluett, 23, threw boiling oil directly in his face. Third-degree burns covered his face, neck, hands, and shoulders — around 22% of his body — and he was rushed to UC Davis Medical Center for specialized treatment.

Bluett fled and was reported missing after the May 30 attack. Jacob’s mother, Amber Smith, described her son as a young man who worked hard to build his life. “Why would he do this to him?”, she said publicly, while her son faced a long and painful recovery process, although, according to her, he maintained a positive attitude.

What makes the case even more disturbing is that there is no confirmed motive: an attack of such brutality, planned in the workplace, with no known reason. Bluett was arrested days after the assault. Justice is moving forward — but Jacob’s scars can no longer be undone.
