Patricio Jonas worked as a concierge in a building in Chile when he saw a stranger trying to take a bicycle from the condominium. He intervened. The thief grabbed him from behind, choked him until he was almost unable to breathe and, once he was on the floor and unconscious, struck him three times in the face.
“I fell to the floor, where I was left half-conscious, and I passed out”, he recounted after reviewing the security camera footage himself. The result was fractures, bursitis and a stress disorder that forced him to take medical leave. While recovering, he asked them to reinforce the building’s security. The response was always the same empty promise: “we’re going to fix the cameras”.
When he finally returned to work, nearly two months after being almost strangled for protecting his neighbors’ property, the building administration fired him. Today he is fighting in court for what they did to him, while the building’s community refuses to comment because he decided to sue them.
