Hajime Moriyasu did not head to the locker room. When the referee blew the final whistle and Brazil celebrated qualification, Japan’s coach walked toward the center of the pitch with his eyes brimming with tears and bowed deeply to the thousands of fans who had traveled to Houston. Behind him, the entire squad silently followed his example.
Japan had fallen 1-2 in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup. A stunning goal by Sano Kaiju in the first half had everyone dreaming, but two goals —one by Casemiro and one by Gabriel Martinelli in stoppage time— erased the dream of a team that came into the tournament aiming for the title. At the press conference, Moriyasu did not look for excuses: “My ability as a coach is insufficient. I want to express my sincerest apologies”, he said, his voice breaking.
There are defeats that define people more than any victory.
