A mattress company in Tokyo decided that napping deserves a cash prize. 😴

The competition is called ‘Mattrace by Koala’ and will take place on October 5, 2026, in Minami Aoyama. The premise is simple on paper: you lie down, sleep for 90 minutes, and a medical team measures your ‘sleep score’ with sensors that assess depth, quality, stability, and how quickly you fall asleep.

The catch is that they won’t let you sleep completely peacefully: the organizers will introduce surprise interruptions to see whether you can stay asleep under pressure, like in real life but with judges watching you. There will be three shifts of 20 people each, registration is free through September 16, and there will even be special prizes for whoever sleeps in the strangest positions. First place takes home 2.22 million yen, about 15.000 dollars, just for being good at sleeping.
