Jason Turner was walking along Point St. George Beach, in Crescent City, California, one day after the 4th of July celebrations. He was with his girlfriend. In the sand he saw an object about six inches long, debris from the night before. He picked it up.
The sheriff’s office believes it was a homemade firework that never detonated during the party. It exploded in his left hand. Turner lost the hand, which ultimately had to be amputated after two additional surgeries at Sutter Coast Hospital. He also lost hearing and part of his vision. His girlfriend was unharmed.
He is the sole provider for his family and still has two school-age children. His daughter Ashley started a fundraiser to cover medical and recovery expenses. Days after the last rocket, the beach was still dangerous.
