Jay Leno, 75, said that his wife Mavis, 79, lives with advanced dementia that robbed her of the trips and outings they had shared for 45 years. Instead, they found a new ritual: driving together every day, with no fixed destination.
In an interview with Hoda Kotb for Today, Leno revealed that there were three devastating years in which Mavis relived her mother’s death every day, trapped in a loop he could not break. Since they can no longer travel the real world, they now do so from the couch: animal and travel videos on YouTube replace plane tickets. He makes a point of easing the tension with humor and supporting her when reality slips away from her.
He assumed legal guardianship of Mavis in April 2024, but what he repeats most has nothing to do with paperwork or diagnoses: she still recognizes him. 🥹 “She seems happy, she seems content”, Leno said. “I enjoy taking care of her”.
