In front of the Dakota building in New York, John Lennon signed a copy of his album Double Fantasy for a young man who calmly asked him for an autograph.
It was December 8, 1980. The young man’s name was Mark David Chapman, he was 25 years old and, as he later confessed, was already carrying the gun hidden in his pocket while Lennon wrote his name. Amateur photographer Paul Goresh captured the scene without knowing that he was documenting one of the ex-Beatle’s last moments alive.
Hours later, when Lennon returned to the Dakota after a recording session, Chapman shot him. He stayed there, reading a book, until the police arrived.
