Kaitlin Armstrong had a plan to disappear. On May 11, 2022, professional cyclist Moriah Wilson, 25, was found shot in the bathroom of an apartment in Austin, Texas. Prosecutors attributed the crime to jealousy: Wilson had had a brief relationship with Colin Strickland, Armstrong’s boyfriend. A day later, Kaitlin was questioned and released. The next day, she sold her Jeep for about 12.000 dollars.

Then she flew to Costa Rica using her sister Christie’s passport, which Christie said she had never given her. She cut and dyed her hair, presented herself as “Allison Page” and went under the knife: a brow lift, nose surgery, and fillers in her lips and around her eyes, for about 6.350 dollars. The surgeon said she became agitated when he tried to photograph her before the procedure. According to the Netflix documentary, the money came from the 40.000 dollars Strickland gave her.

But her new face wasn’t enough. After 43 days on the run, a federal marshal spotted a receptionist with a bandage on her nose and swollen lips at a hostel in Santa Teresa. He recognized her by her eyes. In November 2023, a jury found her guilty.
