Karen Glossop, 58, and Stephen had been together for 33 years. They had never married. Not because they did not want to, but because life—with four children and five grandchildren in the mix—always found something more urgent to attend to.

Until Karen was diagnosed with terminal cancer in early 2026 and was admitted for end-of-life care at Ashgate Hospice in Chesterfield, England. There was no time to lose. The staff there, along with community providers, put together a complete wedding in a matter of days: they donated flowers, a dress, food, everything Karen needed to say ‘I do’ before it was too late.

On Thursday, July 2, she married Stephen from her own bed, surrounded by her children Kim, Luke, Rebecca and Samantha, and her five grandchildren. “It was a team effort to make this happen”, said Kaylee Peacock, a hospice nurse. 33 years of waiting ended in a hospital room, and no one who was there will forget it.
