Keshia Smith, a woman from Pennsylvania, arrived at Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas on April 21, 2026 carrying a weight few people could imagine: her son had died in October 2025, and she had just buried her father a week before the trip. It was not an escape from grief — it was, in her words, a necessity.
The next morning, just after 9 a.m., while walking along the south side of the park, something on the ground caught her attention. It was a flat, smooth stone, about the size of a necklace bead. When she picked it up, she noticed it was heart-shaped. The staff at the Diamond Discovery Center confirmed what Keshia still could not process: a 3.09-carat white diamond, the second largest recorded in the park in all of 2026. In the last decade, only 15 diamonds of that size or larger have been found there.
Smith named it the Za’Novia Liberty Diamond — Za’Novia for her two grandchildren, Liberty for the 250 years of the United States. “I really needed this”, she said while confirming the find. There are stories that cannot be planned or fully explained. This is one of them.
