In 2001, Robin Williams met Koko, the famous gorilla who communicated through sign language. The encounter was full of laughter, games, and hugs, and it achieved something no one had managed in months… To make Koko smile again, as she was mourning the loss of her companion Michael.

Williams described that experience as “amazing and unforgettable”, deeply moved by Koko’s ability to express emotions and affection.
That connection between them was so genuine that, years later, the gorilla would also feel the actor’s loss, because when she was told the news, Koko reacted with deep sadness.

In fact, Dr. Penny Patterson, president of The Gorilla Foundation, said that the gorilla became thoughtful, lowered her head, and finally expressed two concepts in sign language: “woman” and “cry”. 💔
