The security staff at Akron Stadium in Guadalajara thought it was a terrible idea to let bottles of tequila into the stands. The South Korean fans thought it was a terrible idea to waste them.

So before the match between South Korea and the Czech Republic, right in the middle of the World Cup, these fans made the only logical decision: drink whatever was left at the bottom of the bottle before going through the security checkpoint. What they didn’t count on was that the Mexicans standing next to them would see them, applaud them, and within minutes they would all end up together chanting in unison: ‘Korean, brother, you’re already Mexican.’ 🥂

There is something very special about a World Cup that makes scenes like this possible. Two countries that share neither language, history, nor continent, united by a bottle that almost never got to exist. The kind of diplomacy politicians never talk about.
