In Nepal, dogs stop being just pets and are treated like gods during Kukur Tihar. This celebration, held between October and November as part of the Festival of Lights, pays tribute to canine loyalty.

According to tradition, these animals are messengers of Yama, the god of death, and guardians of the afterlife. Legend says that Prince Yudhisthira refused to enter heaven unless his faithful dog could join him, ultimately earning the animal a blessing.

During the celebration, every dog receives a red “tika” on its forehead along with beautiful flower garlands.

The day ends with a feast of meat, eggs, and treats, because on this day, “abuse and neglect have no place.” It serves as a reminder to show gratitude to our most loyal companions.
