Latin America wants Argentina to lose, and there is a reason

Latin America has a ritual at every World Cup: support the brother. This time, they do not like the brother.

Argentinophobia exploded on social media against the only Latin American team that survived the 2026 World Cup. And the reasons hurt because they are real.

Many in the region have spent years complaining that Argentinians think they are superior to the rest of Latin America. The stereotype of the “conceited person” became a trademark. Pride in football, tango, or mate is read, in many spaces, as arrogance.

What once generated admiration ended up generating rejection. On social media, Argentina is no longer just a team: it is the perfect antagonist of the World Cup.

A Mexican shopkeeper said it bluntly: “How can you root for a team that has an arrogant discourse, and that FIFA also helps?”

That is the problem. Not the jersey. What was done with it.

Football does not generate hate. It reflects it.
