Jéssica Viana was 28 years old and worked in occupational safety when Matías was born. The diagnosis came quickly: spinal muscular atrophy, a genetic disease that attacks motor neurons. That day, without knowing it yet, she left her entire career behind.
Matías cannot walk. He cannot eat by mouth. He has scoliosis and difficulty breathing. He needs medical equipment to get through each day. Jéssica learned to perform pulmonary hygiene on him before understanding why it worked.
That is why she enrolled in physical therapy. Four years of study to put theory behind what she was already doing with her hands, to become more confident when therapies were not enough.
On Thursday, August 20, she graduated in Gurupi, in southern Tocantins, Brazil. She was walking toward the stage when she saw him in the audience: Matías, 6, looking at her.
She changed course. She approached him and handed him the diploma with a phrase: “I did it for you”.
Six years reorganizing an entire life around a diagnosis. Six years without a plan of her own. Jéssica said she felt they were “winning together”. Now she wants to practice and help other children in the region with what she learned caring for her own.
There are diplomas that are hung on a wall. This one was handed to the reason it exists.
