A father’s letter to his daughter ✍️
“My daughter, I saw you come in last and you said nothing. I tied your shoelaces when you were five, and today I don’t know how to mend your heart.
What I feel is not hate. It is a simple question: why are you racing against someone who was born with a body different from yours, and on top of that, they ask you to smile?
I didn’t make this up. The Olympic Committee itself says so, and it is now seeking to protect women’s sports. 27 states in the United States say so; they have already banned this in schools. A Supreme Court judge says so, calling this debate a zero-sum game: if one wins, the other loses. And the other, daughter, has always been you.
You trained from the age of seven. Early mornings, injuries, a dream you built with your own hands. No one gave you anything. And even so, the race was lost before the starting gun.
I’m not asking you to hate anyone. I’m asking you to understand that demanding justice is not cruelty. It is defending the idea that your effort should count as much as everyone else’s. I hope sport becomes again the place where the one who ran fastest wins, not the one who started with an advantage.
Until then, daughter, I will remain in the stands. Applauding you, even if the scoreboard says otherwise”.
