Li Meizhen, a 25-year-old Chinese runner, felt something changing in her body at kilometer 34 of the Hengshui Lake Marathon in 2024. Her period had arrived without warning, and blood began running down her legs in front of cameras and hundreds of spectators.
She did not stop. She had nearly eight kilometers left and a finish line that mattered more than the embarrassment: she needed that official time to qualify for an important championship. “If she dropped out, she would have had to run another marathon”, she later explained with the simplicity of someone who has nothing to justify.
