Lily was only a few months old when she was run over. The impact was so severe that veterinarians could not save her eyes and had to remove them completely. At the Shrewsbury shelter in England, they even began to consider whether the kindest thing would be to put her to sleep forever.
But there was another dog in that same kennel: Maddison. Without anyone teaching her, she began walking slowly beside Lily, stopping whenever there was an obstacle, and letting her friend guide herself by scent so she would know which way to go. Louise Campbell, manager of the Dogs Trust center, said that over time Maddison became her permanent guide, and that separating them was unthinkable.
That is why the shelter set an unusual condition: they could only be adopted together. Months passed before a family understood that they were not choosing one pet, but two who had already chosen each other. Lily and Maddison grew old together, the same way they had survived: side by side.
