Argentina beat England 2-1 in the World Cup semifinals and the celebration got out of hand. Lisandro Martínez and Alexis Mac Allister displayed a banner that read “The Falklands are Argentine” in the middle of the celebrations.
The joy of victory was short-lived. Back in England, both players had to hire private security for their homes in the northwest of the country, where they live near Manchester and Liverpool.
For two days, guards patrolled their properties amid fears of reprisals. In the end, nothing happened: no vandalism or attacks. Everything was paid for by the footballers themselves.
Argentina, however, ended up losing the final to Spain.
