Maddie doesn’t understand what she did wrong.
This Staffordshire terrier mix spent more than 400 days confined at the Humane Society of Broward County in Florida, watching other dogs go home while she kept waiting. When her turn finally came, she was adopted. But her family didn’t give her up on a whim: her caregiver became seriously ill and could no longer care for her. So, without understanding why, Maddie returned to the concrete walls.
Susan Leonti, from the shelter team, says that at three years old, the dog trembles with anxiety in her kennel, but wags her tail and gives kisses as soon as she recognizes the volunteers who cared for her before. Recently, she went for a walk with one of them and behaved like a true champion: calm in the car, gentle on the leash, and affectionate with children and other dogs.
Maddie has already shown that she can trust again, even though life has made things difficult for her twice. Somewhere, there has to be a family that will tell her that this time, it’s forever.
And finally, that person appeared. Maddie was adopted by someone new and now lives happily in her new home. She even enjoys one of her greatest pleasures: running and playing on the beach, far from those concrete walls that were her reality for so long.
