There are stories that shake our souls and compel us to hold our loved ones a little tighter. Mael‘s journey is one of them. A little boy who, overnight, went from playing freely to waging a life-or-death battle against an invisible and fierce enemy that doctors diagnosed as meningococcal meningitis, but which in his home was renamed with a fantasy name to help cope with the trauma: “The Dragon”.
This is the story of a mother who refused to let go of her son’s hand in the hospital, and of a boy who proved that the true size of a warrior is measured by the heart.
The nightmare began abruptly, as often happens with severe bacterial infections. What seemed like a common illness turned within hours into a critical medical emergency. Meningococcus invaded little Mael’s body, causing sepsis that put his vital organs in imminent danger.
To keep him alive, the medical team had to make a devastating but necessary medical decision:
- The physical sacrifice: Due to the lack of blood flow caused by the illness, it was necessary to amputate his hands and feet.
- A mother’s pain: Seeing bandages where her baby’s limbs once were is a blow no parent is prepared to recover from. And yet, the tears turned into a promise of unconditional fight.
With a maturity that defies his few years of life, the boy did not focus on what the “dragon” had taken from him, but on everything he still had left to live.
“Mom, the dragon took my hands, but not my hugs”, each of the tender images where he is seen adapting to his new reality with a huge smile and an energy that knocks down any gloomy prognosis seems to say.
Mael is already beginning his rehabilitation therapies for the use of prosthetics, showing a speed of learning and a strength of will that have left even his own therapists speechless.
The battle against the dragon is now over, and although it left deep scars, Mael and his mother emerged victorious. His story is not a tragedy; it is the birth of a real hero. 🥹❤️💪
