Wolfgang was killed in a hit-and-run, and Steve Greig didn’t know how to go on.
Weeks passed and the pain wouldn’t go away, until he realized something: the only way to heal was to make something good come from that loss. He went to a shelter in Colorado and asked for the dog with the least chance of being adopted. He brought home Eeyore, a 12-year-old chihuahua with a heart murmur and already-tired legs.
From then on, he never stopped. Today he cares for 10 dogs, almost all of them elderly, along with a little pig named Bikini, chickens, ducks, and a rabbit that a stranger left in his garden, knowing it would be welcomed there. He gets up at 5 in the morning to prepare different breakfasts for each one and hand out medications like someone caring for a big family. “It is simply satisfying to know that these guys are happy, loved, and well cared for”, he says. The old ones, the sick ones, the ones nobody wants: to Steve, they are precisely the ones who need it most.
