Fourteen years of marriage, a Siberian husky named Lucas, and a divorce that no one knew how to resolve. The husband did not want to keep the dog or remain connected to him, so Doña Blanquita did what anyone would do for a child: she went to court.
Attorney Bellanila Andrea Hernández took the case for free, convinced that animals, as sentient beings, also deserve constitutional protection. Ten months later, in Villahermosa, Tabasco, a family court judge ruled in her favor: the ex-husband must pay about 35 dollars per month and share Lucas’s veterinary expenses.
It is only half of what it costs to care for him properly, but it is history. Never before had a Mexican dog received alimony, and now any pet adopted during a marriage could have the same right.
