Luigi Mangione, 28, stood before a federal judge in Manhattan and admitted what millions already knew: he shot and killed Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, outside a hotel on December 4, 2024.
There was no prior agreement with the government. That means Mangione’s fate rests entirely in the judge’s hands. Federal guidelines suggest between 24 and 30 years in prison, which would technically allow him to get out at just 52 or 58 years old. But prosecutors have already said they will seek the maximum sentence: life in prison, without the possibility of parole, because that option does not exist in the federal system.
