Luisa Arteaga-Villalina was 59 years old and had an apartment in Edgewater converted into a clandestine clinic.
It all began with an anonymous complaint to the Florida Department of Health. From there, the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Medical Crimes Squad set a simple trap: two undercover detectives contacted her through social media requesting an appointment. She quoted 20 units of Botox for 300 dollars, unaware that neither of them was actually a client.
On Monday, August 3, at 1:50 in the afternoon, the moment arrived. Arteaga-Villalina was about to begin the procedure when officers gave the arrest order, just before she administered the first injection. Neither she nor anyone registered at that address had a license to practice medicine in Florida. The following day, Judge Maria Espinosa Dennis set bail at 5,000 dollars after finding probable cause. She had already been transferred to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
