Nigeria wasn’t at the 2026 World Cup. Maduka Okoye wasn’t either. And even so, the 26-year-old goalkeeper ended up becoming one of the tournament’s most searched names. 🤭

It all started with a clip barely ten seconds long recorded during a friendly against Portugal in June 2025: Okoye walking toward the pitch, 1.98 meters tall, with a confidence the camera couldn’t ignore. The video racked up millions of views in days, the media gave him the nickname “the sexiest footballer in the world”, and his Instagram exploded from 250,000 to 1.3 million followers in less than a week. Even Toni Braxton got caught up in the phenomenon.

But behind the viral moment is a serious footballer: Okoye was born in Düsseldorf, speaks six languages, and has spent two seasons at Udinese in Italy’s Serie A, where he recorded ten clean sheets in 30 matches this season, becoming the first Nigerian goalkeeper to achieve it in a top-flight league since Vincent Enyeama in 2015. The country that didn’t take him to the World Cup still ended up talking about him. 🤫
